Well I, like so many others, were shut out of tickets through the Phish lottery yesterday. No on I know personally got any tickets, which goes to show that Phish themselves must not have had many tickets on one of their own shows. This is very saddening and goes to show the sad and pathetic state of the live music industry right now, but that's something for another post.
Tickets go on sale publicly tomorrow at 12 mountain time. I'm going to try my best to score a couple of 4 day passes but I don't have a lot of confidence that I'll manage to grab any.
In other news, anyone find it a little weird that there have been a lot of plane crashes in the last half of a year?
Today the band Phish announced a 4 night stand (July 30th through August 2nd) at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. This is the first time they have played there in 13 years. I am going to be attending these shows, and I'm hoping things turn out differently than the last time Phish was there. In 1996 the town of Morrison was over run by fans that showed up without tickets, eventually causing a miniature riot with police making everyone leave.
Nolan and I both plan on attending these shows, so you can expect to hear more about them as the summer approaches.
Seems like everyone has played this at some point, some more than others. I started playing it again today for the first time in eons. I forgot how fun this game is! Seriously I'm surprised that someone hasn't included this in some curriculum for architecture. Designing your house is completely awesome.
Alright, time for a first "real" post. We are planning on periodically showcasing bands that we enjoy listening too and think that you (the reader) might be interested in checking out. Some of them may be well known and others (especially from Nolan) you might have never heard of.
We're going to start off with Soulive. Soulive is an Jazz/Funk trio from upstate New York. Neal and Alan Evans hold down the drums and organ/bass respectively while Eric Krasno plays a mean guitar. They also often use horn sections which currently consists of longtime collaborator Sam Kininger (who is probably one of my favorite sax players) and Ryan Zoidis. Rashawn Ross (who now plays with the Dave Matthews Band) used to play trumpet with the band.
Their music is pretty unique and it features a fair amount of improv, though they rarely wander far from the the songs general structure. They are mostly an instrumental group, though one of their albums features a full time vocalist, and many other songs feature guest vocals (IE - Joyful Girl feat. Dave Matthews). A good starting point is their first album Get Down! which they famously composed in one studio session. It does not feature any horns and it's a good way to get a feel for the band.
I have not had the privilege of seeing Soulive in concert but I am hoping that will change soon following the release of their new album in April.
